Cheltenham's Perfect Night Out

As a group of friends we are not exactly living it up at the weekend type people. We love cosy nights in playing board games, meals out, pub nights, lazy film nights but when we do have the urge to go out out, we like to go BIG!

After many years of going out together, trying different bars, clubs and towns, we finally think we have perfected the perfect night out out in Cheltenham. How do we know? Well, we always have a great time.

Ingredients for a good night out:
  • Friends
  • Great music
  • Good drinks
  • Buzzing atmosphere
  • Your dancing shoes (make sure they're comfy!)
  • Taxi number home (if like us, you no longer live in or near Cheltenham)

Saturday Night
7.30pm The Food
We all meet at The Langton to catch up on the week, order a few of their famous sharing boards, wet the whistle with a drink or two and get the night started with a round of tequila slammers. We like meeting at The Langton because their is plenty of parking, a large group of us can always find seating inside or out and the atmosphere is chilled to start the evening. In the summer months there are big tables outside in the lovely setting of the Langton garden or in the colder months there are sofa areas and raised seating, enough to fit a large group.

8.30pm The Sophistication
We get a taxi from The Langton straight into town, to The Daffodil Circus Bar on Suffolk Parade. The Daffodil is such a treat but we love starting a night here for a cheeky cocktail. Singapore Slings' for the ladies and Millionaires' for the chaps. The Daffodil, originally Cheltenham's first cinema in the 1920's, is now famous  for its delicious food, live jazz every Saturday afternoon and Monday evening and its beautiful art deco interior. The cocktails are pricey but they are so worth it to start the night off right. The staff really know their stuff here and will recommend delicious cocktails that you won't regret ordering. The atmosphere is relaxed but still feels special and makes the most out of the time you took in getting yourself dolled up for the night.

10.00pm The Pre-Drinks
We then move on further down Suffolk Pardade to The Retreat Wine Bar. This place is always packed but that's part of the fun! You'll need to push through the crowds on a Friday or Saturday night to the bar where you'll find a huge range of drinks, local and international. Somehow we have always managed to find seating for a big group like ours, usually by pushing some tables together outside in their court yard. Expect a buzzing atmosphere, the occasional live music and some coyote ugly style dancing on the tables at midnight.

12.30am The Dancing
We then walk about 15 minutes to Subtone, by far our favourite club in Cheltenham. Subtone is split over 5 levels, with 5 different bars, playing very different music from R'n'B, old skool classics and club classics. Each floor has a very different vibe so there is something for everyone, perfect if you go out in large groups like us. We love the live piano bar on the top floor and the R'n'B room plays some serious tunes, guaranteed to get you all dancing.
Our favourite part of Subtone though is when resident band The Cuginis play in the Bongo Bar. These guys are incredible!!! They play jazz, ska, soul, rock'n'roll.... actually, we're not really sure what type of music they play but we know we LOVE it! It literally has us all dancing like crazy, right through until the early morning. The first time we saw these guys we thought we were dancing to music the DJ was playing and it was only when we danced round the corner that we realised it was live! What a treat!
The Cuginis are playing this Saturday 12th July! Not to be missed - we'll be there, dancing like this no doubt!

3am The late night Munch
This is what is missing from our perfect night out. Does anyone have any recommendations for good late night food? Sometimes kebabs and fried chicken just doesn't cut it for us. We'd love to find somewhere in Cheltenham where we can finish our night by sitting in and eating some good grub.

What's your perfect night out?
